Teaser Tuesday: Ten Big Ones

Welcome to Teaser Tuesday, the weekly Meme, hosted by The Purple Booker, that wants you to add books to your TBR! You can also just share what you are currently reading. We make it very easy to play along, it is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
1: Grab your current read
2: Open to a random page
3: Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers! Everyone loves Teaser Tuesday.

I feel like the week has flown by, but then most of my weeks feel that way! I got a couple of chapters written in the latest Galactic Dynasty novel that I co-author with my hubby and muse. I finished reading one novel, The Shop on Blossom Street, and you can check out my 3-star review if you like. And I managed to get more work done on my crochet and cross-stitch projects, plus a lot more stuff thrown in that I'm not remembering right now! Two teasers are below for your enjoyment, one from the book I'm currently reading and one from a novel I've written! I hope everyone's week went well and wish everyone a happy Teaser Tuesday!

Ten Big Ones (Stephanie Plum #10) by Janet Evanovich

The way I see it, life is a jelly doughnut. You don't really know what it's about until you bite into it. And then, just when you decide it's good, you drop a big glob of jelly on your best T-shirt.

These books never cease to make me laugh and are the ones I turn to when I'm needing a good rollicking read! So if you haven't tried this series yet, give it a whirl. I have no doubt you'll enjoy them. Oh, and beware Grandma Masur... that character will make you pee your pants from laughing so hard! LOL

Starward (Galactic Dynasty #1) by E. M. Lohr and Wendy Lohr

Knock, knock, knock. Startled, I rolled over only to fall onto the hard floor with a grunt, tangled in a scratchy blanket. My mind was in utter confusion as I looked around bleary-eyed for a moment and tried to remember where I was.

Galactic Dynasty is a sci-fi/adventure series that follows Rosa and the crew of Starward on a diplomatic mission to other planets within the galaxy. This particular excerpt is from her first day at the training facility and the chaos and confusion that ensues only increases as she's ushered from one place to the next on the island compound. There are currently four books in this series and the fifth one is being written now, hopefully to be published in the next few months! So, if you haven't heard about this series yet, pop on over to the series page on this website and find out more!

I hope you've enjoyed these teasers and I look forward to visiting your sites soon to see what everyone is reading! Just be sure to leave a link in the comments below!

Happy Reading!

Teaser Tuesday - Who in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

It has been quite a long time since I last participated in Teaser Tuesday. So long, that it took me a while to find who was hosting now as I used to connect with MizB's blog, Should Be Reading. lol Anyway, I'm back and thought I'd join back in on the fun and add a little extra to my teaser, submitting an excerpt from the book I'm currently reading as well as an excerpt from one of the books I've written. This is, after all, my author website, so I do have to occasionally put in a shameless plug! ;)

First teaser from Who in the World is Carmen Sandiego? by Rebecca Tinker:

From up here, I could see the entire island. Students were making their way across the quad. Some were practicing their criminal skills and training together; others were playing games and gossiping.

I should be through with this book and have a review up later this week as part of my ongoing TBR Pile Reviews. So be sure to stop back by and read what I thought about this book!

For the second teaser, I'm heading back to my very first book to be published! It's part of a mystery series for ages 10 and up, following the adventures of two high school friends, Leyla and Lucien, as they stumble into various mysteries!  I'll provide the link to Goodreads for anyone wanting to add this to their TBR pile, but you can also find more info about this book and others on my website in the tabs above!

Spanish Intrigue (The L & L Mysteries #1) by Wendy Lohr:

Forcing his mind back to the present, Lucien remembered why he was at the lake and pulled the napkin out of his pocket. As he squirted the lemon juice on the napkin and watched in amazement, numbers and Roman numerals began to appear. Opening the sketchbook to a clean page, it took him several minutes to carefully copy what was on the napkin.

Let me know what you think of these teasers and add your Teaser Tuesday links in the comments below. I'll be sure to visit your site in return!

Happy Reading!

Teaser Tuesday: Lord Loss

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's teaser comes from Lord Loss (The Demonata #1) by Darren Shan:

Seriously, jokes aside, I'm frightened. They're sharing a secret, something bad, and keeping me out of it. Why? Is it to do with me? Do they know something that I don't? Like maybe... maybe... (p. 14)
Apparently I've been in a Darren Shan kick lately.  That and I found a ton of his books at my local used book store which makes me very happy! lol Anyway, this story, just like his others, has started off in such a way to keep me turning the page and feeling bummed when I have to finally call it a night and get some sleep!  Fortunately I'm not the type to have nightmares based on what I read or watch, otherwise I don't think I would be reading this or any of his other novels right before going to sleep!

What's your teaser this week?

Teaser Tuesday: Zom-B

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's teaser comes from Zom-B (Zom-B #1) by Darren Shan:

It was the darkest, most wretched hour of the night when the dead came back to life and spread like a plague of monstrous locusts through the village of Pallaskenry.  The luckiest victims were slaughtered in their sleep, their skulls ripped open, their brains devoured.  The others suffered a far more terrible fate. (p. 1)

With an opening like this you know it's going to be one heck of a zombie book!  I'm about half-way through this and have found it hard to put it down so far.  The main character is hard to love but at the same time he's hard to hate.  His life is not a good or easy one and the author is amazing at bringing that to light as the story progresses.  Just as any good zombie novel, this isn't about the undead... it's about the living and it definitely comes through in this first installment!

This week's teaser comes from First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson #1) by Darynda Jones:
It was my Uncle Bob. He bombarded me with words, of all things, apparently clueless to the fact that predawn hours rendered me incapable of coherent thought. I concentrated super duper hard on concentrating and made out three salient phrases: busy night, two homicides, ass down here. I even managed a reply, something resembling, "What twirly nugget are you from?" He sighed, clearly annoyed, then hung up. (p. 2)
I finally managed to find the time to start this series and I'm now wishing I hadn't waited so long!  I'm already in love with Charley and can't wait to see how this book continues!  Plus, I love when books make me giggle out loud and I've done that several times already and I'm only about 50 pages in. :)

Teaser Tuesday: The L Section

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's teaser comes from The L Section by E. M. Lohr:

The L Section is one of what seemed to be an endless number of sections in Purgatory.  Souls are assigned to a specific section based on some evaluation that is done as they arrive.  And the ‘L’ in L Section stood for Liars, Losers, and Leeches.  Not the most glamorous collection of souls, but definitely an interesting bunch.  The ‘L’ may explain why I got assigned to the section but it certainly doesn’t explain why I was made the Administrator.  I think it is my penitence for all my years as a government employee. (p. 1)

This is a very unique take on Purgatory with an incredible twist that keeps you thinking long after you've finished the book.  With lots of humor, quirky characters, and sprinklings of interesting stories of how or why various souls were in Purgatory, this kept me turning the pages to find out how this story was going to end!  And the bonus... my hubby is the author behind the imaginative insanity!

Teaser Tuesday: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

•Open to a random page

•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's teaser is from Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children #1) by Ransom Riggs:

Standing in a tomb-dark hallway just inside the door, I stared frozenly at what looked for all the world like skins hanging from hooks.  After a queasy moment in which I imagined some twisted cannibal leaping from the shadows with knife in hand, I realized they were only coats rotted to rags and green with age. (p. 84)

So far this book has been riveting!  With scene descriptions painted in such vivid detail as above, I have no trouble at all putting myself in the character's shoes and seeing what they see or feeling what they feel.  The fact that photographs are peppered throughout just add to the atmosphere the author is creating.  Now I just wish I'd read this book much sooner!

This week's teaser comes from Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars #1) by Sara Shepard:

But something felt the same, as if Alison's presence was still floating here.  Emily felt woozy and leaned against the wall for support. (p. 24)

Last week, I started binge watching season 1 of Pretty Little Liars and liked it well enough to give the books a try.  So far I'm enjoying the read and am looking forward to seeing how the first book in this series plays out.

•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's teaser comes from A Feast For Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire #4) by George R. R. Martin:

The stench of death was growing stronger, despite the scented candles.  The smell reminded Jaime Lannister of the pass below the Golden Tooth, where he had won a glorious victory in the first days of the war.  On the morning after the battle, the crows had feasted on victors and vanquished alike, as once they had feasted on Rhaegar Targaryen after the Trident.  How much can a crown be worth, when a crow can dine upon a king? (p. 174)

In honor of Season 5 of Game of Thrones ending, I wanted to share this particular passage.  It really struck me when I read it, especially the last line.  And after seeing some of the craziness this season, it seems to resonate even more.  What's a crown or riches or power when each individual will eventually reach the same end?  Crows will dine on anything and anyone, regardless of their status or wealth.  Definitely puts things into perspective!

This week's teaser is from Awakening Iris (The Dreacatchers Saga #1) by Jessie McClain:

This novel will wring the emotions right out of you and is so beautifully written.  The main character, Iris, is messy and beautiful and loveable and her journey throughout this book was a roller coaster ride, but one I was definitely glad I got on!

•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's teaser comes from A Veil of Shattered Dreams by Rachel Stark:

I think I knew a little girl once, maybe. The inclination is strong, but an invisible hand is gripping me, pulling me farther away, and tugging on the pang in my heart. I don’t resist and wait patiently on the other side of the veil. And when it parts, the spotlight falls upon the face of the figure I recognize immediately, the pale, ghostlike woman seated across from me. (p. 3)

This is an intense psychological trip that is beautifully written.  The imagery throughout the novel is haunting and the twist at the end leaves you stunned and contemplative even after you finish reading.  Definitely would recommend this to anyone who loves psychological suspense novels!

This weeks' teaser comes from The Wrong Girl (The 1st Freak House Trilogy #1) by C. J. Archer:

The prospect of meeting him filled me with foreboding. What sort of man inspired a nice girl like Sylvia to fumble nervously with the hooks and eyes on my dress? What sort of man had his niece and nephew kidnap for him? (p. 31)

So far this novel is holding true for a good gothic mystery and I'm looking forward to seeing where this story will go!

Book Meme Participation Coming Soon!

As some of you may have known, I was a fairly active participant in the book review blogging world up until about a year or so ago.  Things started getting really crazy with my writing schedule and I had to put my focus on writing instead of reading and reviewing books.  I've really missed that world and have decided to dip my toes back into it just a little bit by participating in some memes I took part in back then.

So, starting Tuesday, I'll be participating in Teaser Tuesday hosted by A Daily Rhythm.  And Friday I should have a post up for Book Beginnings on Friday hosted by Rose City Reader.  We'll see how well I'm able to keep up with these two and maybe I'll add more in the future.  After all, I am still reading, just not reviewing like I once had been.

Hopefully you all will enjoy the upcoming meme posts and I encourage any who wish to join in the fun by leaving comments or links to your own Teasers and Book Beginnings each week!  Until then, happy reading!

Teaser Tuesday Posts Have Moved!

For those of you who have been following along, you know that I try to post a Teaser Tuesday post each week here on Wendy's Musings.  With the upcoming overhaul of this site (I am trying hard to keep it just about my author side of the house), this particular post will no longer appear.

However, if you would like to continue following my teaser posts and would also like to check out my past and upcoming book reviews, then come on over to Escape Into Fiction, my book review blog!  Today's Teaser Tuesday post can be found there along with all sorts of other bookish things.

Thanks for your understanding and I apologize for any inconvenience.

Teaser Tuesday: A Storm of Swords continued

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

This weeks' teaser comes from A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire #3) by George R. R. Martin.  If you haven't read the first two books or seen the HBO series then this passage might be a tad spoilery where Bran's physical condition is concerned:
Bran shook his head.  The day was growing old by then, and long shadows were creeping down the mountainsides to send black fingers through the pines.  If the little crannogman could visit the Isle of Faces, maybe I could too.  All the tales agreed that the green men had strange magic powers.  Maybe they could help him walk again, even turn him into a knight.  They turned the little crannogman into a knight, even if it was only for a day, he thought.  A day would be enough. (p. 343)

Bran Stark is such an amazing character.  I know this particular snippet is much longer than the two sentence rule, but the entire passage resonates so well that I had to share.  I just felt that this passage summed up Bran beautifully.  It shows the predicament he's in, the desires he has, and the maturity that came to him much earlier than it would have if he hadn't been permanently injured.  After everything he's been through, he still clings to his childhood dream of becoming a knight one day and for him, in his early gained wisdom, one day would be enough.

This weeks' teaser comes from A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire #3) by George R. R. Martin:

My hirelings betray me, my friends are scourged and shamed, and I lie here rotting, Tyrion thought.  I thought I won the bloody battle.  Is this what triumph tastes like? (p.56)

So, I have now made it to the third book in this amazing series and it just keeps getting better and better.  I still love Tyrion and ache so badly for him for not getting the respect and love and appreciation he truly deserves.  The author has created such a complex character that makes you invest your emotions into him even though he's only fictional.  The mark of a truly gifted writer!  I can't wait to see how this book and this particular character evolves!

Teaser Tuesday: A Clash of Kings final

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This weeks' teaser comes from A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire #2) by George R. R. Martin:

He knelt beside her, so they were face-to-face. “A girl whispers if she fears to speak aloud. Whisper it now. Is it Joffrey?”
Arya put her lips to his ear. “It’s Jaqen H’ghar.” (p. 685)

This will be the last teaser from A Clash of Kings as I should hopefully be finished reading it by the end of this week.  Arya Stark continues to be one of my absolute favorite characters and I loved this particular exchange between her and Jaqen H'ghar.  She had realized that the two names she'd whispered to the assassin before had been meaningless in the grand scheme of things and she wanted her last to truly mean something.  This was a bold move by her and in a lot of ways changes the direction of her path yet again.

Anyway, this has been an amazing book to read (really no surprise there) and I can't wait to get to the end of it so I can continue on to the next book in this incredible series!

•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This weeks' teaser comes from A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire #2) by George R. R. Martin:
Across the tent, Rhaegal unfolded green wings to flap and flutter a half foot before thumping to the carpet.  When he landed, his tail lashed back and forth in a fury, and he raised his head and screamed.  If I had wings, I would want to fly too, Dany thought. (p.195)

Daenerys is such an amazing character!  I love watching her story unfold and the strength, wisdom, and perseverance she possesses.  I've read a lot of novels over the years, and I believe she is probably the first character that has impressed me this much.  Many kudos to George R. R. Martin for creating her!

Teaser Tuesday: A Clash of Kings

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This weeks' teaser comes from A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire #2) by George R. R. Martin:

When Bran repeated that to Osha, she laughed aloud. "Your wolves have more wit than your maester," the wildling woman said. "They know truths the grey man has forgotten." The way she said it made him shiver, and when he asked what the comet meant, she answered, "Blood and fire, boy, and nothing sweet." (p. 71)

I finally finished A Game of Thrones and loved it so much, that I immediately started reading A Clash of Kings.  This is just such an amazing, epic fantasy read that I can't believe I went this long before reading it.  Sigh.  Anyway, the passage above is one I really liked in that it shows the developing relationship between Bran and the wildling woman, Osha.  Outside of Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and Arya Stark, Bran Stark is probably my next favorite character in this series.  And Osha intrigues me since I have yet to figure out how she's going to play out in this series.  I guess I'll just have to keep reading! lol
